Rules of Peanut category

Following are the national rules for peanuts and pistacio, used for Interscale '99.

1. GENERAL

1.1. DEFINITIONS

Scale model is a miniature of a heavier-than-air airplane, which carried at least one man. Model must be built by the competitor.

1.2. CHARACTERISTIC OF PEANUT MODEL [PISTACIO]

Peanut [Pistacio] is scale model driven by rubber band(s) with maximum wingspan of 13”(330mm) [8"(203mm)] or maximum length (not counting the propeller) of 9"(229mm) [6"(152mm)].

1.3. NUMBER OF MODELS

Each competitor can use one or two different models in each category during the competition. Only better result obtained by those models in each category is counted for evaluation.

1.4. NUMBER OF ASSISTANTS

Competitor can have one assistent for the competition. For multiengine models additional assistant is allowed.

1.5. JUDGES

The organizer will assign at least two judges for the static points awarding according to point table,

1.6. NOTES

  1. Scale propeller can be for flight replaced by propeller of arbitrary shape and size.
  2. No other part of the model can be removed or exchanged between static evaluation and flying.

2. STATIC EVALUATION

2.1. DOCUMENTATION

  1. Documentation is provided by competitor
  2. The exact name of the airplane must be shown on both the application and documentation.
  3. To reach the maximum number of points in static evaluation the competitor is required to provide the judges with following documentation:
    1. Exact three view scale drawing of real airplane. Unpublished drawings drawn by competitor or third party can be accepted only if verified by airplane manufacturer or another official institution.
    2. at least one photograph or printed reproduction of real airplane.
    3. Coloring – if the photograph b) is grayscale only, published color three view must be provided or printed reproduction with description or printed or authorized description.

2.2. POINTS FOR STATIC EVALUATION

Item Points
1. Shape similarity, side view10
2. Shape similarity, front view10
3. Shape similarity, ground view10
4. Design similarity, surface closeness15
5. Colors and markings:completeness and correspondence10
6. Colors and markings:complexity10
7. Details15
8. Craftmanship, overall appearence20
Building evaluation total S (max = 100)

2.3. Notes

  1. Items not fully proved by documentation can reach max. 50% of possible points
  2. Undocumented items are evaluated by 0 points
  3. Static points are awarded to final evaluation only if the model made official flight

3. FLIGHT EVALUATION

3.1. NUMBER OF FLIGHTS

Every competitor has the right for three competition flights with two attempts for each model. The longest flight is counted for flight evaluation. Model is hand launched or starts from the ground. Ground start is awarded with extra 5 sec, if the model started by itself with no help from the competitor.

3.2. VALID FLIGHT DEFINITION

  1. If the first flight is 5sec or more
  2. Second attempt

Time measurement starts at the moment of hand launch or when the model actually gets into the air when ground started. Measurement ends at the moment when model touches the ground floor.

Notes:

3.3. ATTEMPT DEFINITION

  1. Flight time was less than 5sec.
  2. Part of the model was dropped during the flight
  3. Model did not made it into the air during ground start

Note: If the part of the model was dropped during the second attempt, the time up to this moment is taken into account.

3.4. EXTRA POINTS

  Bi
Helicoptery, gyro100
Flying wing60
Each additional working propeller (with different axis of thrust), flying boat40
Float plane, counterrotating propellers30
Pusher propeller, tanemd, canard20
Biplane, each additional wing, each non-working propeller10
Oval fuselage crosssectionmax. 10
Extra points total B = sum Bi =

3.5. PENALIZATION

  Ni
a) Simple wing covering15
b) Penalization for strong changes of model with respect to the original made due to improvement of flying characteristics
  Shifting the wing backwards 5
  Nose prolongation 5
Increasing of tail assembly torque 5
  Dihedral increasing 5
  Non-symetrical wing 5
  Other essential changes 5 each
Penalization total N = sum Ni =

3.6. FLIGHT RESULT

Flight points for Peanuts [Pistacia] are calculated from following formulae:

Peanuts  Pistacia
F = SQRT( ( 100 + 2*(B-N) )*L )    F = SQRT( ( 150 + 3*(B-N) )*L )

where:
L[sec] – time of longest flight

4. FINAL RESULT

Points from static evaluation 2.2. and points from flight evaluation 3.6. are summed up:

T = S + F

Competitor with highest number of points wins. In the case when two competitors obtain the same number of points the flight result determines the final order.
